Little League Baseball Rule: Bat in contact with plate, then connect w/ ball. Fair or Foul?
In a little league game the batter squares to bunt. His bat is touching the plate as the ball is delivered. (picture a low pitch). While the bat is resting on the plate (still held by the batter) the ball makes contact with the bat and rolls into fair terratory. If the bat is touching the plate and makes contact with the ball, is it a fair or foul ball?
Where the bat is when it contacts the ball is irrelevant at any level. What happens to the batted ball is key. I can't find a reference to a bat touching the plate anywhere.
For a ball that does not pass 1st or 3rd, the key is where the
ball comes to rest (if untouched) or where is when first touched by a player, runner, or umpire.
For a ball that passes 1st and 3rd in the air, the key is the position of it when it first hits the ground, fence, pole, or a fielder. If the ball bounces past 1st and 3rd, the key is the position when the ball passes those bases. Rule 2.00, official baseball rules.
