What should I do with these Praying Mantis ootheca egg sacks?
I was lucky to witness a praying mantis laying a ootheca right in my front yard. I also found another ootheca on the same plant.So I have to oothecas but the plant they are on I will die in the fall and i usually throw them away with the leaves.I found 2 praying mantis hanging out in the plants near the oothecas. 1 looks like its missing part of its front arm and the other was eating a bumble bee. What should I do with these oothecas I dont want to kill all those mantis.
Yayy! I had 2 of them also and it was incredible. There are literally up to 2500 in one single egg case. I would recommend leaving them where they are just because they IMMEDIATELY start killing each other after they hatch. I only ended up with 5 when it was all said and done and I finally just let them go after their first 2 molts because I didn't want to lose anymore. It was horrible. They come out the size of your pinky nail bed. Thousands of them.
If you want to keep them still, keep them out of direct sunlight and spray the area you are keeping them in with a water bottle to keep it a little humid. Be patient and enjoy.
